All of these mesh routers basically aim to do the same thing: blanket your home with a strong wireless signal so that all of your devices can always connect to the network without dropping off or losing the signal. They do this by using multiple units, or nodes, that wirelessly connect to each other. They also provide simple setup via smartphone apps and the ability to monitor your network from outside your home.
It really depends on your needs and the layout of your home. Also: your budget. The new Eero comes in a variety of different configurations. It consists of a single Eero unit and two of the new Eero Beacons, which are smaller and slightly less powerful. The company says the Pro package is enough to cover a three- to five-bedroom house, but if you have a particularly large McMansion, you can add more units as necessary to cover it.
Many other mesh routers offer the same parental controls and malware protection at no extra charge as well.Eero or Google Wifi? How to pick your new mesh network
The unused USB port from the first generation has been jettisoned, but the small white LED on the front of the device remains. In addition to the third radio band, the new Eero has support for Thread, a relatively new smart home protocol that allows it to connect to and manage devices such as locks, doorbells, motion sensors, and more. While the main Eero router looks identical to the last model, the new Beacon features a different design. The Beacon leans into its resemblance to a nightlight by actually being a nightlight.
You can configure the nightlight to be on all the time, only when the room is dark, or off permanently through the Eero app. So how does it perform?
Based on my experience in my own four-bedroom, 2,square-foot home, the new Eero performs just as well as the prior version, blanketing my home with a Wi-Fi signal and allowing me to utilize my Mbps cable internet service to its fullest. It is not significantly better in practice than the first Eero, and not much different from my experience with Google Wifi and other mesh systems, but it did let me get slightly faster speeds think Mbps instead of Mbps, both of which are more than enough for 4K video streaming in the far reaches of my home than I was able to with the older Eero.
I typically have 25—30 devices connected to my Wi-Fi network, ranging from phones, to tablets, to set-top boxes, to laptops, to connected lights and other smart home gadgets. The Eero app for Android and iOS handles all of the setup and configuration of the network which takes about 15 minutes and is about as easy as can be and lets you see what devices are connected to the network at any given time. The app has the standard features many modern routers offer, including guest network support, family profiles, and basic network management, such as DNS or port forwarding.
I typically have a lot of smart home hubs and other devices plugged into a network switch in my home office, which is located a floor below my living room.Esp8266 oled spi
A second node in my office provides a place to plug all that stuff in. But because the Beacon lacks an Ethernet port, I had to relocate my switch and all of my other hubs Philips Hue, SmartThings, Sonos, and others to my living room, which is less than ideal.
The Linksys Velop is a fantastic option for a home WiFi system. On Amazon, the standard pack comes with 3 Velops. These Velops actually have a pretty neat set of features. First, this system comes with a 3-year limited warranty, so if you run into any problems, it should be easy to get the help that you need. Eero is another awesome home WiFi system. Similarly, setup is also going to be a breeze with the corresponding mobile app.
This is where things get a little tricky, because there is no solid number provided for how much space these will cover. Supposedly this particular package 1 Eero and 2 beaconswill be sufficient for homes with 2 — 4 bedrooms. While this is a great system and we recommend it, you may need to contact the company directly to help you decide on how many beacons you will need to start with. Once your eero is set up, the beacons require being plugged into a wall outlet, and they emit a nightlight-like glow.
It has a built in sensor to adjust to light and darkness, or you can control it from your mobile app. However, with the Velop, guaranteed coverage of 6, square feet for a price. That is a lot of space, and will be more than enough for the majority of homes. With the eero, however, we wish they had a more solid number to go off of. The Velop is a great one to just go ahead and order. But not only that. These systems are easy to set up, and even easier to use.

I'll be installing these in a sqft apartment in NYC which requires two wifi routers because of a dead spot between the bedroom and the living room. Generally we're really only streaming devices at most, as it's just two people living here. My question would be In other words, will I feel a difference between the 1st and 2nd generation in my environment?

Our vision for eero is to go beyond providing perfect connectivity by adding context and intelligence to our homes.National cheer competition
As everything in our homes comes online, and we consume more and more content over the internet, we can imagine services and experiences — whether built by us or partners — relying on eero for WiFi and more.
We can even imagine changing everything again, this time with another much bigger idea: that over time eero just might evolve into the underlying operating system for the home of the future.
The all-new eero is the same form factor as the original eero, but more than twice as powerful.German
In your home, this means that you and your family can do even more — downloading huge files, FaceTiming, multiplayer gaming, VR. All at the same time. The all-new eero will be at the center of every new eero system, connecting directly to your modem.
When we began to develop 2nd-generation hardware concepts, we looked at the data on existing eero systems and noticed that over half of our current customers had placed eeros in hallways, stairwells, kitchens, and bathrooms.
Many of these ended up on the floor or on already-cluttered kitchen counters. Because Beacons work in any room, they make an eero system more customizable than ever. Add as many as you need to a new or existing system to cover your entire home. Since eero Beacon works well in hallways, stairwells, and kitchens, it features a built-in nightlight to keep your family from tripping over that forgotten shoe. An ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the brightness depending on the time of day, or you can easily control the light by setting schedules in the app.
To truly be able to add sensors and gadgets throughout your home, you need a reliable connectivity option that requires less power than WiFi. Built right into your eero system, Thread will mean fewer hubs on your counter or TV stand.
And coupled with over-the-air software updates, it means your new eero system comes future-proofed. With just two units, this system is actually more powerful than an original eero system with three eeros. You can mix and match new eeros and eero Beacons to meet your needs. These new products will start shipping at the end of the month on a first-come, first-served basis. If you want to start with a single eero 2nd generation or add an eero Beacon to an existing system, you can purchase them at eero. When it comes to avoiding these types of threats, we can be our own worst enemy. While all eero systems come with encryption that protects and secures the traffic flowing over your network, if you or a family member visits a harmful website or connects a compromised device, you might inadvertently invite an online threat into your home. When Eero launched last year, it helped drive a revolutionary shift in the WiFi router market.
Unlike the traditional WiFi router which was complicated to configure and manage for the average user, Eero wanted to create something that was easy to setup, easy to manage and could provide reliable whole home WiFi coverage no matter the size of the home. For the most part, Eero achieved its goal. Rather than a major redesign, the 2nd Generation Eero focuses on improving on the first generation product while simultaneously launching lower powered wall mounted node called the Eero Beacon.
The major improvement for the 2nd Generation Eero is the addition of the tri-band radio, which provides it with a 2.
This should help provide improved wireless backhaul capabilities to the Eero and support more devices simultaneously compared to the first generation product. For the second generation, Eero will be available in kits or the Eeros can be purchased individually. Included in the packaging is some sparse documentation, the Eero, two Eero Beacons, a power adapter, and an Ethernet cable. The exterior design of the unit is unchanged from the first generation however, there are quite a few internal improvements.
The biggest improvement is that the Eero now features a tri-band radio rather than a dual band radio which was used in the original Eero. This should significantly help improve backhaul performance. New for this generation Eero is the Eero Beacon. The Eero Beacon is a smaller outlet mounted device that acts as an Eero node. The most interesting design aspect of the Eero Beacon is the addition of a 10 lumen LED nightlight that can either be scheduled to turn on at certain times of the day or be set to turn on based on the ambient light, similar to an actual nightlight.
As the Eero Beacon will take up an entire outlet when installed, this allows you to install the Eero Beacon without a compromise to safety. Once powered on, the Eero and Eero Beacon will emit a status light which displays the status of the device.
When Eero came on the scene last year, its major differentiating factor on the software side is that it was managed solely by the use of an app making the setup process easy and intuitive for the average customer. With the 2nd Generation Eero, everything remains largely the same with the same easy setup process and the same easy management interface. On startup, the Eero app will help you configure the Eero through a simple installation process. After setting up the first Eero, which will be the gateway Eero, simply elect to setup the remaining Eeros and the entire system should be up and running within 15 minutes.
On the initial status page, the app displays all the Eero devices along with a speed test of the network as well as connected devices. Tapping on each device offers more information about the device. Unfortunately, features such as VPN, QoS or advanced parental controls is still unavailable at this time. Clearly the Eero is designed for a more average home user who simply wants to have a working network rather than spend hours trying to figure things out. This new service provides enhanced online protection against malwarephishing, ransomware and viruses.
Additionally, Eero Plus also offers content filtering as well as VIP support which Eero claims reduces wait times to little or none. Routing performance is tested using two systems. Transfer speeds between the systems are then tested using iPerf 3. Routing performance for the 2nd Generation Eero is on par as expected. Performance is similar to what we saw from the first generation Eero.
Is it worth upgrading to the Generation 2 Eero?
Transfer speeds between the two systems is then tested using iPerf 3. Wireless interference is minimized as much as possible however, there are still quite a few neighboring Wi-Fi signals from other residences around the area. Results of performance testing is in the 5GHz band if available which provides maximum performance. At Location 2 using the single Eero, performance reached just short of Mbps which is also slightly faster than the first generation.
In testing, using the Eero Beacon as a hop to connect to the Eero was able to provide about Mbps in Location 2.La filosofia delluno : passages, h: il collezionista. (walter benjamin)
This is a slightly lower number than we saw from just a single more powerful Eero on its own, but the addition of the Eero Beacon does significantly improve signal which in turn allows better coverage over longer distances. In order to test the Wi-Fi coverage of the system, I utilized NetSpotwhich is an excellent, easy to use utility that will allow you to create Wi-Fi site surveys. Signal coverage from the Eero and Eero Beacons were excellent.
Eero Review (2nd Gen, 2017)
When I tested the first generation Eero last year, I was mostly impressed with the system.Although its performance isn't on par with the Plume Superpodsit was easy to set up and didn't outright fail any of our torture tests.
Eero maintained decent browsing latency all around the house, even while simultaneously delivering four emulated 4K video streams. On the other hand, if you want Eero because of its Alexa integration The setup process for Eero was gratifyingly quick, especially in comparison to the exhausting procedure Nest Wi-Fi put us through last month. But although it was quick and easy, some of the fancier bits seemed to be broken.
In particular, the Eero app wants to offer you placement advice for your units based on a fake floorplan. There are buttons which offer to let you alter that floorplan to match your own—but at least in our testing, it didn't work.
We tapped "Shape," "Floors," and, on the next screen, "Edit home layout" until our fingers were raw, but nothing happened. Luckily, we know this home—and which layouts do and don't work in it— extremely well by now, so we just shrugged, placed our Eeros, and called it a day. The whole thing was over and done with in well under 10 minutes—under five, if you don't count the time spent waiting for Eero units to cold boot when first plugged in.
You'll eventually be glad that you did. You must login or create an account to comment. Skip to main content. This Eero kit consists of three Eero routers, rather than the less-expensive one-router-and-two-Beacon kits.
Jim Salter. Eero is neither particularly lovely nor unlovely in our opinion. But its all-white all-glossy finish is decidedly difficult to photograph. This is the back of Eero.
The charging jack is USB-C. Eero's white LED is a little bit bright for our tastes—it's OK during the day but can be obnoxious at night. It can be disabled entirely in the Eero app.
Amazon’s inexpensive Eero mesh Wi-Fi kit is shockingly good
As always, we strongly recommend you physically label Wi-Fi mesh gear with the location where it should go. When you begin setting up Eero, the first step is telling it about your home. Or at least, it's supposed to be—these "Shape" and "Floors" buttons did nothing when we tried them.
Eero suggests placement of units in its fake floor plan. This is unlikely to be helpful, since the "Edit home layout" button doesn't seem to work at the moment. After placing each additional Eero unit past the router, the system will test for connectivity. Assuming you didn't place your Eero out of reach, the test finishes and flatters you about your champion placement, and it's onto the next. When you run out of Eeros to place, you're done! The router delivered triple-digit throughput in every room of my square-foot home—more than enough bandwidth to support several HD video streams simultaneously.
Interestingly, that location was my home theater, a spot that most wireless devices have difficulty penetrating because of the thickness of its walls and ceiling and the presence of acoustic caulk sandwiched between its multiple layers of drywall. Most everywhere else, the Eero 2 finished in the middle of the pack.
The Eero 2 was faster than the original product in every location—with both a Windows and a Mac laptop client—except one: the bedroom, where the clients are in the same room as the router and separated by nine feet of air. The Eero 2's performance is represented by the light olive-green bar. Netgear's router-plus-satellite Orbi wasn't always the fastest, but it was always much faster than the Eero 2. You can use the Eero app to program it to turn and off at designated times.
If you find the light intrusive, you can turn it off in the app. The Beacon has an integrated nightlight that adjusts its brightness according to ambient light conditions. The Eero router and the Beacon have another differentiating feature: a Thread radio. Thread is an up-and-coming wireless mesh network designed to connect devices such as thermostats, appliances, lighting, and smart entry locks in the home. Originally developed by Nest Labs—which uses it in its thermostats, smoke detectors, and other products—Thread is also backed by several other heavy-hitters, including Qualcomm see aboveHaiku ceiling fans and lightsYale entry locksSchneider Electric lighting controlsand Somfy motorized blinds, among other things.
Each step is spelled out clearly with easy-to-understand text and illustrations. The app even presents floorplans for different styles of home and lets you specify the number of floors your home has. Based on your choices, it will recommend optimal placement for the router and the Beacons. Each time you place a Beacon, the app will perform a network test to determine how optimal that location is.
It took all of 15 minutes to get my network up and running, including providing custom names for each access point. The app has a great security feature, too. Eero then sends you a text message with a verification code that you type into the app to gain access. In the middle, the app informs you of how many clients are connected to the network.
Below that, it displays the name of your network and how many Eero devices it consists of. A big red button at the bottom of the screen lets you block the client from your network—useful if you discover an unauthorized user. You can operate one guest network, for which a passphrase has already been established. You can edit the passphrase or just push a button in the app to generate a new one.
From there, you can paste it into a text message. Each client device can be assigned a nickname and assigned to a user profile. Eero also offers a subscription service that bundles advanced parental controls. The second-generation Eero Home WiFi System is attractively designed, easy to set up and use, and very capable. I was a little concerned about the Beacons' being so close to the floor, but the antenna placement seems to have taken care of that.
And in my test environment, the Beacon in the center of my home was at counter height because I have a wet bar in the center of my home. If you have the home infrastructure to take advantage of it, it will significantly increase your network speed.
If I were to switch today, it would be to an Orbi system. Correction : This review originally reported that the Netgear Orbi already supported hardwired backhaul from its satellites.
